Oil Lamps for Emergency Light Prepping
Oil lamps are a great addition to your emergency lighting plan or for camping trips. You can purchase all the components relatively inexpensively including lamp, wicks and oil. The oil and wicks down burn down nearly as quickly as candles and are easier to carry around.
These lamps have the advantage of serving double duty. Some are beautiful and can be used in home decor as well as become emergency lighting. This may help ease some reluctant spouses into prepping. There are of course oil lamps with a more utilitarian look such as the old firehouse-looking lamps or those used for camping. We have a mix of both.
I've found that one mid-sized lamp will illuminate a small room enough for moving around and reading close to the lamp. The prices range from cheap (usually under $20) to over $50. The prices sometimes reflect the quality but some may be more expensive because of decorative elements.
You want to have other backup lighting in case of power outage including candles and flashlights with extra batteries on hand. But oil lamps should be in your lighting plan too. Lehman's, an excellent source for non-electric gadgets, has a huge selection of oil lamps of nearly every kind. Their website shows many but you might want to request a free non-electric catalog for a full selection and to browse their other products. They even carry beautiful Victorian-style wall lamps, so you can always have emergency lighting ready to go. Oil lamps and supplies can be found online and at places like Walmart, K-Mart and camping supply stores.
