First Winter Sowing Attempt
First attempt at winter sowing. Photo taken by Trish Deneen |
I started my first attempt at winter sowing a couple of weeks ago. I've heard of cold-frame gardening, but this is slightly different. Basically, you use milk/water jugs or a similar container, cut it at the halfway mark but leave a portion uncut so you have a flip-top jug. Also, put slits in the bottom for drainage.
Place moist soil in the bottom half and seeds on top and pat them down. tape the jug shut making sure the spout on top doesn't have its original cap on. You can also use zip ties or pipe cleaners instead of tape. Place the jugs outside and wait for spring germination.
The first photo shows five water jugs and one milk jug used for winter sowing with the following seeds: Parsley, arugula, salad lettuce, Brussels sprouts, Cherokee purple tomato, and pleurisy root. T
The photo to the left shows another jug with sweet Cicely seeds placed in the corner of the house I plan on planting the seedlings if they survive.
The photo to the right shows the jugs a couple of weeks later covered by snow. My dog was curious and dug up the parsley.
