Adventures in Dentistry - Thoughts on Prepping

I was so excited this month due to the fact that because of a better paying job and my writing earnings creeping up I was going to be able to place more money in savings than I have been able to in a while (per month that is).  But nope, my teeth had other plans for that cash.  I need one crown now and possibly another one in a few months.  I'm lucky in that I have dental insurance which pays half, but even with that, my cost will be $500 a pop.  But even though I'm not in terrible pain, I'm not putting this off.

Even though I'd love to put that money towards paying off debt and savings, I think prevention of dental problems now is something that will help with my prepping plans in the long run.  Unfortunately, my husband (God bless him), puts this sort of thing off until he's in terrible pain, thereby having to take time off work and possibly spending more money on dental repair than he would have had to originally.  He has a lot of PTO available to him.  I'm not in this position, so I can't wait until I absolutely have to take days off unless I'm extremely ill.  It's no work - no pay for me.

I don't think our society is going to collapse soon and that we'll have to be our own dentists.  I coming from a mindset of possible job loss for either me or my spouse due to the economy.  I have eight old metal fillings left in my mouth that are eroding and will need work, so as soon as they do, I buckle down and delve into my savings.  I'm lucky I don't have to put this on credit.  While things are decent for my household money wise, I would rather do this bit of prevention rather than wait until we don't have insurance or when I'm knocked on my butt because of nerve pain.

To me this is along the same lines with other health issues.  I need to lose weight and that's a subject for another post.  I'm not saying preppers should reach for perfection physically, but I know that I'm prediabetic.  If I don't reverse this now, I surely don't want to be someone who needs insulin in a SHTF situation.

What about you?  Is there some health issue you're putting off and buying other prepping items instead?  No judgement (because I've been there, done that).  Just a thought.

  1. 3 of the 4 members of my household (all but my husband, who's in good shape already) are on the Dukan diet, needing to lose between 70-100 pounds each. It's been 4 weeks, and I've lost 10 pounds! Now we just have to stick to it...

  2. grrr! I NEED to quit smoking. We worked on the last of our dental issues over the past few years. Many other minor health issues would disappear if we quit the smokes, but it's a hard habit to break, and the cost is thru the roof. I could pack away a LOT of major prep items if we could shake this!
